Coop and Gordon scale up circular home delivery initiative

Coop is the first grocery chain in Sweden to offer home deliveries in circular bags to online shoppers. In collaboration with Gordon, Coop is now ramping up Gordon Circular, offering deliveries in reusable fabric bags to customers in the Greater Gothenburg area. These bags can be used up to 50 times and, even after just five uses, have a lower climate impact than a paper bag that is only used once.

“I really believe our customers will appreciate this. We know that many people want to make climate-smart choices. In fact, Stora Coop Sisjön has the highest share of organic product sales of all Stora Coop stores in Sweden, which speaks for itself in terms of what is important to our customers,” says Olle Petterson, Online & Digital, Coop Väst.

Coop and Gordon first in Sweden with circular home deliveries

Gordon Circular is a comprehensive circular e-commerce packaging system. Rather than being thrown away after each delivery, the bags are returned, washed and reused.

Coop is the first in Sweden to offer circular home deliveries, and Coop Östra has already tested Gordon Circular in Stockholm. The result is significant benefits for both customers and the environment. Experience shows that customers appreciate not having to handle and recycle paper bags. Coop is also seeing increased loyalty and customer satisfaction. Now they are taking the next step and scaling up circular deliveries together with Gordon in Gothenburg as well.

"We have already made over 20,000 loops with Gordon Circular for Coop, helping them to replace 2.5 tonnes of single-use packaging. A life cycle analysis of the entire Circular system, covering everything from manufacturing and materials to transport and washing, shows that you only need to use a Circular bag five times to have less overall climate impact than a paper bag used once," says Ali Ghoce, CEO of Gordon.

Simple, convenient and hygienic

Customers who choose home deliveries in circular bags can easily return them, either directly to the driver, outside their door or at the Coop Sisjön store. After each use, the bags are washed at 70 degrees and dried. This means that customers can feel confident that their deliveries are being made in reusable bags that are completely free from allergens and bacteria.

"This is unquestionably a service that aligns with Coop's brand. When we introduced Gordon Circular in Stockholm, for example, we found that, as well as the climate benefits, it strengthened our customer relationships and reduced customer churn. We have been named Sweden's most sustainable food chain, and this is yet another initiative that helps us to live up to that title," says Niklas Zeitlin, Head of E-commerce & B2B at Coop Sweden.
