Last mile company Gordon is renewing and expanding its Swedish fleet with 146 new light trucks for refrigerated transport of food and pharmaceuticals. Each refrigerator on these trucks has insulation made from 4,367 recycled PET bottles. It is now clear that Stena Recycling will be able to recycle 90 per cent of the cabinets.

Over the course of a month, Gordon can make 600 000 home deliveries of food and medicines purchased online. To meet the growing demand for coordinated deliveries JPGS Car body in Laholm will deliver 65 new trucks to Gordon in the autumn of 2022. 81 more new trucks will arrive from the same manufacturer before the summer. The addition of 146 trucks should be seen in relation to the fact that Gordon had 112 of its own trucks in Sweden before deliveries began. By the summer, Gordon's Swedish fleet is expected to consist of 187 light trucks, which is an increase of 67 per cent in one year.
ArmaPET can now be recycled
The refrigerators on the new lorries are made of the environmentally friendly insulation material ArmaPET, made from recycled PET bottles, from the company Armacell. For each refrigerator, 4 367 0.5-litre PET bottles have been recycled. The lifetime of the fridge on the lorries is estimated at around ten years. At present, the Stena Recycling recycle 90 per cent of the cabinet into new materials or energy. Until the cabinets are recycled, Stena Recycling will work to increase the proportion that is recycled into new materials.

Most commonly, insulated lorry bodies are made from XPS/EPS or polyurethane foam. Making a lorry body from ArmaPET means 245 kg less CO2 emissions than using the most common materials. Compared to XPS/EPS and Polyurethane, ArmaPET has better insulating properties over time, higher strength and a longer lifetime, resulting in less environmental impact, lower weight and lower energy consumption over its lifetime. XPS/EPS and Polyurethane are not recyclable.
Major order with aerodynamic design
- We are grateful to be able to deliver this large order to Gordon. Compared to previous truck cabinets we have built for Gordon, the new ArmaPET cabinets have been redesigned with better aerodynamics to reduce drag. The result is that fuel consumption is significantly reduced. This is a new design and new manufacturing method that we are alone in the market," says Glenn Sjö, CEO of JPGS Kaross.
These refrigerators are the first in the Nordic region made from recycled PET material to be FNA certified. This certification shows that the refrigerators have undergone rigorous testing and have been proven to maintain a constant, low temperature for several hours of operation even when it is hot outside.
- "The cabinets are really good, both in terms of the climate and in terms of our high requirements for transporting food and medicines in an unbroken cold chain with what is called active cooling. This means that the entire cabinet on the lorry is cooled down," says Elion Najim, Fleet Manager at Gordon.
About lorry refrigerators made with ArmaPET
ArmaPET is manufactured by Armacell using raw material from recycled PET plastic that can no longer be reused for food packaging. In order for JPGS Kaross to build an FNA-insulated truck refrigerator, 4,367 0.5-litre bottles made from recycled PET bottles are required. The insulating properties of the refrigerator are FNA certified by RISE.
